Allah سبحانه وتعالى says in a verse of Surah Furqan:
أَرَأَيْتَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ إِلَهَهُ هَوَاهُ أَفَأَنتَ تَكُونُ عَلَيْهِ وَكِيلًا
Have you not seen he who has made his nafs god? [N.B. Partial translation]
[Surah al Furqan 25:43]
In a hadeeth Sayyidina Shaddad ibn Aws رضى الله عنه narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ الْكَيِّسُ مَنْ دَانَ نَفْسَهُ وَعَمِلَ لِمَا بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ
وَالْعَاجِزُ مَنْ أَتْبَعَ نَفْسَهُ هَوَاهَا وَتَمَنَّى عَلَى اللَّهِ
The intelligent one is he who suppresses his desires (nafs) and who works for the hereafter, and the helpless one is he who follows his desires and hopes for the mercy of Allah.
[Reported by Tirmidhi, ibn Majah and Ahmed]
The reason why Banu Israeel rejected the ambiya عليهم السلام is because they worshipped their whims and desires (nafs). Following ones nafs leads one to reject the truth and therefore one must work hard to overcome the nafs.
We live in a time when people have formed their own ideas of piety and deen, good and bad according to their own desires . Everyone wants deen to be that what their nafs want it to be and not what Allah سبحانه وتعالى wants it to be. Thus, everyone has their own idea of religion (designer spirituality); every person has his or her own Islam according to their nafs. Any part of deen which does not agree with their own nafs is immediately rejected and eventually, such a person ends up worshipping their own nafs rather than Allah سبحانه وتعالى.
We must make our inner self and nature conform to deen rather than the other way around. Shaitaan has fooled us into having our idea of piety and spirituality. We must sacrifice our own desire and follow the laws of Allah سبحانه وتعالى. This is true sacrifice.
Any action should only be for the pleasure of Allah سبحانه وتعالى and not in order to satisfy our desires or for name and fame.

as-wr-wb- GUILTY AS CHARGED in the above, but I always try my utmost not to follow my desires/whims/nafs, if they are to lead to the displeasure of Allah swt. I dont think anyone can really stand up and say truthfully that they do not act upon their desires from time to time, if there is such a soul, I would dearly love to meet! One can only reach a certain degree in this matter having gained knowledge of what Allah swt has ordained for us as Muslims, and to me that is all thru out your lifetime spent here in this duniya, ws-wr-wb. ps Great reminder.
A timely reminder and a wake up call for the likes of myself. To struggle against the nafs could be likened to having a big appetite and being obese to the point where one’s heart is in danger, a srict and prolonged regime of diet is nessecary to avoid it, hard as it may be, if one fails, the loss could be fatal. May Allah protect us all. Amin.
JazakAllah khair. I feel as though the nafs is like a covering between us and Allah SWT. The more we indulge in our desires the thicker that covering becomes and the more we give up on our desires for the sake of Allah SWT the thinner that covering becomes.
How can the soul be close to Allah SWT if there is love and desire for anything else but Him?
jazakallaah, again. unfortunately most ppl won’t stop followin their nafs till it’s too late. I’ve been doin the same, for example, as the person in bro Tariq’s example, and the longer you make excuses for yourself, the harder it becomes (ie. the longer you explain to yourself for example that I have the right to overeat/oversleep/overinsertchosennafsthing, the harder it becomes to change your ways). Another idiotic thing we keep repeatin to ourselves tho is that we *can’t* change. What arrogance! as if it’s actually us being the true actors of our deeds..
I really like this blog mashaAllah. and I really like the fact you guys update it so often. Keep up the good work and Allah reward y’all.
