‘The Trustee Of The Ummah, Abū ʿUbaydah Ibn Al Jarrāḥ’ – Delivered by Shaykh Riyadh ul Haq on 31st May 2013 at Al Kawthar Academy (Leicester, UK)
Our role models and icons as Muslims should be the beloved companions of the Messenger ﷺ. We have been taught and encouraged to learn and reflect on the lives of the companions in the hope that we may be inspired, strengthened and motivated to adopt their character and follow in their footsteps.
In light of this, we learn about this great personality. Such was his position that his devotion and love for Allāh and his Messenger ﷺ was amazing. In fact, The Messenger’s ﷺ love for him was also unique! Addressing the companions on one occasion, Rasūlullāh ﷺ proclaimed,
“There is not one person amongst you except that if I wish, I could seize him for some fault in his character except Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrāḥ.” [Ibn Asākir]
He was trusted by Allāh and his Messenger ﷺ and thus appointed by Sayyidunā ʿUmar as the supreme commander of the forces dispatched to Shām. Despite the glory and position awarded to him, his asceticism and simplicity were unrivalled. Sayyidunā ʿUmar would marvel over it. Sayyidunā ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd would say, “My best friends amongst the companions are Abū Bakr, ʿUmar and Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrāḥ.”
He is recognised as the trustee of the Ummah since Rasūlullāh ﷺ publicly announced, “Every Nation has a trustee and our trustee is Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrāḥ.” [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī]
