Imam al-Hasan al-Basri lived during a time of great turbulence and turmoil due to the rule of the tyrant, Hajjaj bin Yusuf. Despite the wrongs and crimes which Hajjaj committed against the Sahabah and Muslims, Imam al-Hasan al-Basri defended Hajjaj bin Yusuf when someone spoke ill of him in a private gathering.
