The Hijrah: A Sacred Journey & Watershed

‘The Hijrah: A Sacred Journey & Watershed’ – Delivered by Shaykh Riyadh ul Haq on 23rd November 2012 at Al Kawthar Academy (Leicester, UK)

Today, we see millions of people converging upon the city of Makkah. However, there was a time when the Prophet ﷺ was prevented from prostrating to Allah in the Sacred House.

Following unrelenting persecution and fear for his life, the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ eventually fled the city of Makkah to Madīnah. This strenuous and burdensome journey took a number of days and marked the beginning of the Islāmic calendar. It was a miraculous journey and a watershed, not only for the Muslims, but also for the history of the entire world. It was in Madīnah that Islām gained prominence and spread to the four corners of the world. It is due to this sacred journey and the Prophet’s ﷺ unprecedented sacrifices that Islām remains with us today.

The salient lessons that can be drawn from the hijrah and its significance in a Muslim’s life have been beautifully outlined in this speech. Further, we learn how the lunar calendar works and the origins of the Islamic calendar.
