The Stinters – A Tafsir of Surat al-Mutaffifin Part 3
The Stinters – A Tafsīr of Sūrat al-Muṭaffifīn Part 3 of 5
Delivered by Shaykh Riyadh ul Haq on Friday 24th June 2022 at Al Kawthar Academy, Leicester
This talk delves deeper into the consequences of dishonesty, the importance of accountability, and the role of belief in the Hereafter. The talk explains that taṭfīf (stinting or cheating) extends beyond trade, applying to worship, relationships, and daily interactions. A major cause of this behaviour is forgetting divine accountability. The lecture highlights scientific studies showing that people behave more ethically when they feel watched, reinforcing the Quranic warning that Allāh records all actions, even minor ones. The Book of Deeds (Kitab al-Fujjār) is kept in Sijjīn, a place of imprisonment and disgrace for those who persist in wrongdoing. The Prophet’s ﷺ teachings warn that most traders will be resurrected as sinners unless they maintain truthfulness and righteousness.
The discussion also explores the rejection of the afterlife by the elites of Quraysh, particularly Walīd ibn al-Mughīrah, who recognized the Quran’s truth but refused to accept it due to his love for wealth and status. This serves as a cautionary tale about the corrupting influence of materialism. The talk emphasizes that true success lies in upholding fairness, embracing truth, and preparing for the Hereafter, rather than amassing wealth through dishonesty. The Quran consistently warns against being deceived by worldly gains, as they ultimately lead to moral downfall and divine punishment.
